1:17 pm - Dear Lovely Death by Langston Hughes
Dear Lovely Death
That taketh all things under wing-
Never to kill-
Only to change
Into some other thing
This suffering flesh,
To make it either more or less,
But not again the same-
Dear lovely Death,
Change is thy other name.

The Full Cupboard of Life by Alexander McCall Smith

This is the 5th book in the "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" series, and I enjoyed it just as much as the previous four. When looking for a light read this series is an excellent choice. The writing style is so mellow and relaxed. I look forward to reading the next edition (if there is one?). 8 stars

11:37 am - Book Challenge
Unfortunately I didn't reach my 80 book challenge for 2004. I read 63 in 2003 so I didn't think 80 would be much of a stretch. I'm behind at BC on writing journals for these remaining books for my 2004 list. So I'm going to list them here and I'll get around to BC entries soon. I have journalled my 2005 reads so far though.

39. The Silent Passage by Gail Sheehy
40. Making Sense of Menopause by Faye Kitchener Cone
41. Me Talk Pretty One Day David Sedaris
42. The Trail of Tears: The Story of the American Indian Removals by Gloria Jahoda
43. Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee by Dee Brown
44. 1621 A New Look at Thanksgiving by Catherine O'Neill Grace
45. Women and Revolution in Nicaragua by Helen Collinson
46. The Burden of Memory The Muse of Forgiveness by Wole Soyinka
47. Wild Swans by Jung Chang
48. Falling Leaves by Adeline Yen Mah
49. To School Through the Fields by Alice Taylor
50. The Proper Care of Rabbits by Darlene Campbell

This gives me a total of 29 nonfiction and 21 fiction.

The Law of Similars by Chris Bohjalian

A story of lose, homeopathy, life choices, and human nature. Bohjalian weaves a very interesting story involving alternative medicine and legal matters, which must be his favorite topic, because the other book I read by him,"Midwives", involved a midwife in legal trouble. I plan to read more of his work.

Biblioholism The Literary Addiction by Tom Raabe

Biblioholism is defined as the habitual longing to purchase, read, store, admire and consume books in excess. The author categorizes the different book addict personalities and also offers a quiz so you can determine if you are a biblioholic. This book is both witty and scary. 6/10 stars

On The Down Low: A Journey Into The Lives Of "Straight" Black Men Who Sleep With Men by J. L. King (library copy)

King shares stories of himself and other so called straight men who are married, engaged or otherwise involved with women but also sleep with men. For some reason these men don't consider themselves bi-sexual. They say they don't have any desire to be in a relationship with a man, they only want to have sex with them. And according to King most men on the DL (downlow) don't use condoms and therefore are putting their wives/S.O. at risk for AIDS.

A very eye opening read. 6/10 stars

Frida Kahlo: Torment and Triumph In Her Life and Art by Malka Drucker

I'd never heard of Frida Kahlo before I found this book at the thrift store last year. She sat on Mt. TBR for 11 months waiting to be read. Then last month while browsing on B. Dalton bookstore's bargain table I came across a beautiful oversized coffee-table book titled, "Frida Kahlo", that contained 90 of her paintings, some photographs and an intriguing short biography. This peeked my interest in Frida Kahlo, so I finally read her biography.
